Toggl vs Harvest for freelancers (2026)

Toggl Track is timer-first; Harvest is billing-first. Here is what each publishes today on price and invoicing, which one suits a solo freelancer, and a third option if all you need is timer plus invoice.

Last updated November 2, 2026

The short answer

  • Toggl Track is a polished timer with strong reports. It does not create invoices itself — you export hours and bill elsewhere.
  • Harvest turns tracked time into invoices in the same app, and its Free plan includes invoicing for 1 seat and 2 projects.

That matches what freelancers report. In a February 2026 r/Freelancers thread, one person who bills hourly said Toggl “feels very ‘time only’… once it’s time to invoice, you’re basically exporting numbers and doing the rest somewhere else”, while Harvest felt “more built for agencies or teams” (thread).

When Toggl Track is the better pick

  • You want native desktop and mobile apps, focus mode, calendar integrations and automatic activity tracking.
  • You already invoice from QuickBooks, Wave, Xero or similar and only need clean hours to attach.
  • You manage a small team and want planning, capacity and approvals on the higher plans.

When Harvest is the better pick

  • You want invoices, Stripe/PayPal payments and accounting integrations in the same tool as the timer.
  • You have one or two active projects, so Harvest Free covers you, or a team that needs expenses and estimates.

Watch the bill if you grow: Harvest’s 2026 plans add usage-based charges on top of seats — see what changed in Harvest’s pricing.

A third option for one person who bills hourly

Hourledge keeps the Toggl-style timer and the Harvest-style invoice in one place, without seats or project limits.

  • Start a timer in one tap, or add past time as start/end or a duration like 1:30. Mark each entry billable or not.
  • Rates cascade from client to project, so the amount is right before you invoice.
  • Unbilled time is grouped by client; one tap makes a draft invoice, then a PDF with your logo, bank details and a Stripe or PayPal pay link.
  • Coming from Harvest? Import your Harvest time CSV. There is no Toggl importer yet.
  • Free during early access. One simple flat price later, no per-seat fees.

Hourledge is for one person: no team seats, approvals, expenses, planning or native apps (it runs in the browser on desktop and phone). Also compare Clockify vs Harvest and Toggl vs Clockify.

Questions

Can Toggl Track send invoices?

Toggl’s own time-tracking-and-invoicing page (checked November 2, 2026) says it gives you the billable hours and rates, which you export as CSV or PDF and drop into the invoicing tool you already use. Billable rates are listed from the Starter plan.

Is Toggl or Harvest cheaper for a freelancer?

Both list a Free plan. Toggl Free has timers and personal reports but billable rates start on Starter at $9 per user/month (annual price shown). Harvest Free covers 1 seat and 2 projects and includes invoicing; Harvest Teams starts at $9 per seat/month billed annually or 1 monthly, plus usage-based charges.

Which is better for a solo freelancer who bills hourly?

If you need the invoice in the same tool and have up to 2 projects, Harvest Free fits. If you mainly want a great timer and already use QuickBooks, Wave or similar for invoices, Toggl fits. If you want timer plus invoice with no seat or project counting, Hourledge is built for that.

Is Hourledge free?
