A Clockify alternative for freelancers who invoice

Clockify’s free plan is a capable timer, but invoicing sits on a paid seat. If you work alone and bill by the hour, here is what Clockify currently publishes and how Hourledge keeps the timer and the invoice together.

Why freelancers look for a Clockify alternative

Clockify is built for teams as much as for individuals: kiosks, time off, approvals, GPS and scheduling sit alongside the timer. For one person who simply needs to bill hours, that can be more than needed — and the invoice itself is not on the free plan.

In a May 2026 r/freelance thread asking for a time tracking and invoicing app, the common advice was to use Clockify Free for tracking and a separate tool such as Wave or a PDF template for the invoice (thread). That works, but it means exporting hours every month and retyping them.

What to look for if you bill by the hour

  • Invoices from tracked time on the plan you actually use, not a separate tool.
  • Rates that cascade from client to project to entry, so the invoice total is right the first time.
  • A predictable price that does not depend on seats.
  • Exports any time — CSV and PDF, so your records are never locked in.

How Hourledge fits

  • Timer first. Start in one tap, fix a forgotten start time, or add past time as start/end or a duration like 1:30.
  • Invoices from unbilled time. Unbilled hours are grouped by client; one tap makes a draft with dated lines, then a PDF with your logo, bank details and a Stripe or PayPal pay link.
  • Client reports. Any date range, CSV and PDF export, and read-only share links your client opens without an account.
  • Price. Free during early access. One simple flat price later, no per-seat fees.

Where Clockify is still the better fit

Hourledge is for one person. It has no team seats, approvals, time off, kiosk, GPS, scheduling, expenses or accounting integrations, and it runs in the browser on desktop and phone rather than as native apps. If you need those, stay on Clockify.
